Going into something new can be scary, because not knowing what to expect is nerve racking. Although getting the strength to try something can be rewarding. Has track influenced these 7th graders throughout the year?

Track is hard work and some 7th graders haven’t been exposed to this kind of exercise. It’s very physically challenging, so it was difficult for these athletes to adjust, but as the strong student athletes they are, they adapted.

Bobby Jenschke, a field coach for track, says “I feel they could’ve been in better shape. Some that were in sports were ahead but the others didn’t start running early off, I think.”

As a result of the difficulty of track and the amount of talented athletes, not everyone makes the cut. That causes some people to drop out of track all together. It takes a lot of mental toughness and courage to try a different event once you’ve been cut from one already. But some do, and they end up great track stars for that second event.

A long distance runner, says “Once I got cut from long jump I decided to try long distance and ended up going to every meet for it. Now I love running and I’m glad I could help out the track team.”

After all track is a very rewarding individual sport and a lot of fun. We will have to say goodbye to some great 8th grade track runners and jumpers, but hello to some future winners.

The runner says, “Track got me in shape and the meets were fun, so I’m going to try high jump along with long distance next year and I’m hoping I’ll be good.”
