Many student athletes will try out for their high school or junior high soccer team. Going from a small J.H team to a H.S team can be intimidating, which could put more pressure on athletes. 7th graders are figuring out how things work and are excited for next year to improve and excel.
When Corbett first started its soccer team, in 2016, during the tryouts the Clemens soccer coaches were watching these students practice. These coaches got to meet the athletes who will be going to Clemens soon. Some 8th graders who will try out for high school soccer at Clemens are not nervous because they know what to expect at the tryouts.
“The tryouts will feel the same as last year because the high school coaches were there. I’m not nervous because I already know what it will be like at tryouts,” said Brett Minyard, an 8th grader.
Being the “fish” at a new school can be difficult. You don’t get as much of a say when you’re working with older grades. Only one 7th grader got to start on the Corbett’s boys’ soccer team, so many 7th graders going into 8th grade next year are very excited for soccer season knowing they will get to make decisions and many other opportunities that they didn’t have their 7th grade year.
“In my 8th grade year I would love to be a starter because I never got to do that my 7th grade year. Also I will have more of a say on the team, and know what to expect,” said Leo Arango, a 7th grader.
Being on a new team with new teammates can take some time getting used to. Some feel out of place while others adapt quickly. But in the end you all come together as a team and have one goal for your season that you want to get to.
“My goal for high school soccer is to make it to districts and get first. I know we can do this if everyone one on the team works like a team,” said Minyard.
