Did you do sports in middle school, and plan to do them in high school? Most kids in middle school do sports, but some do not continue in high school. From more competition to the amount of time you need to put into a sport, some young athletes end their journey in middle school.

In high school, the competition grows immensely, so as a young athlete, you have to constantly improve. You’re always fighting for your spot on the team.

“High school has older players, so the younger ones in high school play higher competition,” says Keely Williams, junior high athlete.

Another difference is how much time you have to put into a sport, or several sports. In middle school the amount of homework and the difficulty of the classes are much easier than they are in high school. This causes you to have less time for sports, and extracurricular activities, once entering high school.

Williams said that in junior high she did volleyball and track. Once she hits high school , she’s only focusing on softball, because she needs to put more time into school.

There is more variety in high school, sports wise. There are more sports to play, more teams to play against, and this can lead to more fun! Also, because there is more variety, you may not be able to play as many sports in high school as you may have done in middle school. Such as only playing basketball in high school instead of volleyball, basketball, and track.

Whether you are doing sports for fun, or for the competitiveness of it, you should enjoy what you do!

Keely Williams said that she did enjoy parts of participating in junior high sports. “It was really fun, but athletics was very challenging.”
