Horrifying homework

Paxton Witherspoon, writer

Many kids get lots of homework during the day and homework is supposed to be helpful, but having too much could potentially be harmful.

One way homework can affect our learning is because we have to go home to work that we might not understand and then nothing ends up getting accomplished.

“ Practice makes perfect, however if a child doesn’t “get” what’s going on in class, homework is going to be confusing and frustrating,” said Carollee Witherspoon, Corbett parent.

It’s also difficult for us to complete our homework by ourselves at home because we get stressed and don’t understand and we might not have anyone who could help. So, if anything,we’re just getting more stressed than we already were.

“ It depends on the day. My kids have had more than two hours of homework on a given day which is way too much,” said Carolle Witherspoon, Corbett Parent

Kids also get pressured by teachers to complete homework and teachers kind of expect them to understand quickly.  But teachers also don’t realize that kids might have stuff going on at home that is worrying them and might be preventing them from doing their best work.

“Homework is helpful because it increases the student’s ability to be able to complete certain tasks. It also helps increase memory as well. It can be hurtful if there is too much, or the complexity level is to high….Students could get burned out and not want to do homework or put forth effort,” said – Coach Balderas, Corbett coach and literacy teacher.
